Domino folds

Breaking news...Domino magazine will cease publication.

"This decision to cease publication of the magazine and its website is driven entirely by the economy,” Condé Nast CEO Chuck Townsend said. “Although readership and advertising response was encouraging in the early years, we have concluded that this economic market will not support our business expectations."

Update: Mediaweek reports that the March issue will be the last. Domino's editor Deborah Needleman will leave Condé Nast, while some staffers will be placed elsewhere within the company. A tipster tells New York magazine that Friday is the staff's last day in the office.

I'll just repeat what I said out loud upon seeing your post, "aw crap!" that just blows!!! So what's left? I've had my subscription to House Beautiful for over a decade and will keep renewing...keeping my fingers crossed that cookie doesn't go under. Boo boo.....sniff....

I've subscribed from the beginning, but I have to say the last 6 or so issues have been a lot of "same stuff, different (celebrity) room", and it wasn't the fresh, new different mag it was at its start.

Just saw this and knew you'd have a post up already; of course you (as always) are on it.

All I can say is that I want my $10 back. Oh, and someone else let Nick Olsen write a blog column. He's funny.

WV: fugno. Prophetic?

NONONONONONONONONONONONO. N O .

As a devoted Lucky reader, I too have subscribed since the beginning. I think Domino offers a very different oeuvre from other shelter magazines. Fresh, down to earth, kicky. I'm sad.

{ By the way, Australia's Inside Out is a good pub to round out U.S. mags. It's not like Domino, but it is artistic and fresh. }

I'm sad.

The Australian shelter mag Belle is another good one. More Elle Decor-ish than Domino-ish.

I literally deeply gasped out loud when I saw your headline...

I have two thoughts really...

One, I'm almost glad in a twisted way, because it's like the decision is made for me on whether to renew (for all my mags, it's like -- renew because they're dangling such a good deal before me, or don't renew because magazines are technically a waste of money and time?)

Two, SERIOUSLY... I think we're all in for a big big re-think in life, THINGS, consuming... I can barely conceive how blogs (including my own) can keep going on the way they do just about wanting wanting pretty pretty things. I mean, I think we should keep talking about beauty and maybe about MAKING beautiful things, but marketing and such -- who can buy?

THOUGH
last night I was finally reading my copy of the latest Elle Decor, with all the bluey rooms, and OMG it was inspiring... dammit! We gotta have at least something, right?

That's just it WPZ, these magazines DO provide inspiration. Most features and pieces have crazypants budgets, but you can always take away something from the editorial.

I just spent 90 minutes downloading every picture off the Domino website that I thought I might use on La Lamp Shade. I have carpel tunnel, crossed eyes, and a tidy little folder titled "Domino RIP."

Dude, I just sent in a check to renew my subscription too. I sorta feel like a jerk for saying this but last few issues has been a complete bust. So, I don't know why people are so shocked. I was shocked how fast it closed. I thought it was going to takes months or like a year.

Just left a rather lengthy discourse on your blog, Please Sir.

Careful what you ask for. ;)

Yikes! How disappointing. I'm very grateful that I decided against subscribing just the other week. Hope none of our awesome Australian mags fold!!

yikes. I look forward to the backlash magazines that start appearing, once people finally feel like they have money again and we're all sick to death of downsizing and simplifying. I think the trend against consumerism will only last as long as people are broke.

I am sick. Just read and posted and of course you were already on it.

I LOVED Domino. It had a different POV than the other design mags. And really interesting ideas.

I wonder if anything will survive?

I wish they could figure out a way to stay online. I am with you on going over and downloading the shit out of everything.

At least I have every issue and their book...

Oh Domino, how I love you! Why can't you stay online at least?
