White people problems - eco edition

In case you cannot make out the small type:

"No! Last week's wind storm in Montreal blew a plastic grocery bag into our tree. The bag is impaled on a limb and doesn't look like it's going anywhere..."

If you wish to be of assistance with this problem, you can leave a comment here.

Oh to have such problems.

I was in Nebraska once and the headline on the local paper was "Dog kills another dog". Serio.

Wait, how come I'm white and don't have white people problems???

Oh don't. Our local news (and this is the BBC, not a commerical station) recently had "dog died". Honestly.

If they only have one lonely bag waving in the wind, they should shut the hell up. We have shopping carts and boxes and all kinds of crap up and down our street. Welcome to city life.

Not too long ago, a Blogger friend of mine, who by the way, lives in Buffalo, posted a blog about this same subject. This time, the Canadian trash bag blew up on his roof and attached itself to his weather vane. What's up with that part of the country? The girl with the bag in the tree should get a 15 to 13-year old boy with a good arm to throw something up there to catch that bag. My kids were successful at this in our own yard.

eheh... give those AT guys a break: they have to post a trillion times a day so anything goes when days are slow :D

I agree with hmstrjam.

That said, looks like that tree will have to come down to get the bag out.

Shame.

No -- DON'T give them a break. They don't have to post a trillion times a day and this post is INANE. I just read it myself, then made fun of it on Twitter. And I'm so glad to find it here being made fun of, too. Did you see the "knit a tree cozy" comment? Hi-larious.

Seriously, Back Garage, does AT have a contractual obligation with its advertisers to post 167 times a day or are they just revved up about decoratin'?

Welcome by the way. Your blog is a fount of useful information. And I love your tag line - "Design first. Second hand."

wait, I'm confused. Are they upset that the bag is unsightly, or distraught because they cannot get it down and recycle it properly?

Which brings me so a semi-unrelated rant: why is the recycling (or not) of plastic bags like THE do-or-die issue? Everyone I know uses those bags as bin liners for trash and recycling. I use them at the pace that I obtain them. I would imagine that millions and millions of people do the same thing. But meanwhile, the amount of nylon carpeting and carpet padding that goes into landfills every year is totally horrifying, but to my knowledge there's been no huge crusade to get people to stop buying it...

Excellent point, Brew Mistress. Choosing whether or not to use plastic bags is a near daily eco-affirmation for people with enough disposable income to enjoy that luxury of choice. "Look at my cotton shopper - I care!"

I'm with you. I use the plastic bags I collect as bin liners. They're a much thinner plastic than purpose-made plastic bags.

And I gather the poster is upset about having trash in his or her tree, but then wraps that distress into a point about choosing cloth shopping bags.

I use my plastic bags to pick up dog poo.
Maybe that's why they're upset it's in the tree.

Around here and near tidal water courses, plastic bags blow into the water and are ingested by sea creatures, turtles especially, and they die.
