My hopes were dashed

Earlier this year the Ace Hotel Group opened what may be the most delicious high-end motel on the planet - the Ace Palm Springs. So how excited was I to hear that the Ace New York had a "soft" opening recently? Very.

That was until I saw the room photos. Dumplings, they look like NYU dorm accommodations. Complete with awful wall decals and Lands' End-looking plaid comforters. Some rooms even have bunk beds (see last photo). Ugh. All that's missing is dirty laundry on the floor and a bong.

Ugh, that is pretty awful! Not even clever or quirky or cheeky...just B.A.D.!!! And you got me all excited for a minute there...we are heading to NYC next week and I thought a change of reservations might be in order. On second thought...nope!

Oy. Very disappointing...and weird. Why???

Suckage. I do like the double doors to the bathroom in the last pic. The rest looks like the inside of a terrible memory involving a night of tequila and some missed exams.

You're spot on, it's a P.O.S. Dorm room.

This is the trend in hotels right now - classy motels!
Check out The Hotel Valley Ho in Scottsdale, AZ for a motel done right!

I tried to book it on my last trip to NY but the opening got delayed so I didn't get to see it in the flesh. Coincidentally, I used a photo of the Palm Springs Ace for an unrelated post today. LOVE that one.

I landed here via Head Over Heels via your bedroom blog. Glad to have you found you! As a recently returned expat, I love other expats' blogs.

Eddie - Thanks for that tip! Should I ever find myself in Scottsdale, I know where I'm staying.

Rightbank - Hello and welcome to this deliciousness! Any friend of NKP's is a friend of mine.

Tragic with a hostel vibe...

bahahah! a bong would certainly make these rooms more appealing.

Wow - and they expect me to pay top dollar for that? Not really digging it!

Woa, I haven't gotten around to checking out the NYC pics yet...yikes. College dorm room - great analogy. Where is the charm which exists in the other locations? I'm all for minimalism, but really? This is the best you've got?

I expect there are probably dirty dishes in the sink and half eaten pizzas stashed under the beds.

Bummer.

When I was last visited NYC I stayed on a friends sofa in her tiny NYC apartment with her FOUR cats. I like cats - but not on my head so much. So this dorm thing looks not so bad to me! Of course being from the other side of the world everything costs me double & tripple - so this dorm would be like me paying for a fancy pantz hotel!
