A switch in White House decorators?

Would we see a papier maché Prince head in the Red Room?

Call it the Domino curse. Rumors are swirling that designer to the uber-rich Michael S. Smith may be out as the official White House decorator. Barney's Creative Director Simon Doonan was seen Wednesday "taking notes with some staffers in the White House's East Room and State Dining Room. Several tour-goers said they heard him talking about the drapes."

Dumplings, you will remember Domino magazine going ga-ga with their "scoop" of the announcement of Smith to the post of Chief Geyh. Editor Deborah Needleman went more than a little berserk with breathless online announcements of Smith's every bowel movement that week.

While Smith was a good choice for a sensitive update of the stuffy Bush-era furnishings, his association with the robber barons of the Aughts cast a pall over the project. Hiring bon vivant Doonan, who has a much more democratic approach to decorating, would be a public relations boon. I, for one, would love to hear Doonan periodically updating us with witty missives about poking around the musty federal warehouses and finding Jackie Kennedy's old hairdryer.

Oh, and Doonan's husband Jonathan Adler could create the grooviest set of White House china EVER!

Wait. On Monday, Joni (Cote de Texas) just publicly apologized to Smith for "breaking" the news that he was out of the job a few weeks ago.

Thanks for that link Jeannine, I hadn't seen that post.

But as the old adage goes "Where there's smoke, there's fire."

AND Peak of Chic posted on facebook last night that she had just met Smith and he was still very much on the job - right from the horse's mouth. Good luck to you. I hope you don't have to do what I had to do a few days ago. not fun...

So the question is what was Doonan doing there?

Inquiring minds want to know!

Oh, this is too good...to be true???

Raina said...

Probably, NKP, but the mind reels at the possibilities...

Yeah, I saw Joni's post and thought about smoke too. Can you imagine a Doonan-decorated white house? Truly fabuloso!! If Smith's still in, maybe Doonan's doing a special event... a lavish state dinner or something.

Raina, I've got to reread this post. Your writing here is super deliciously yummy. Like you lips are whispering this juiciness right into my ear!

And I'd bet my right hand that Doonan arrived with a couple of Pink Label Barbies for the first girls!

I guess I must be confused -- isn't Michael S. Smith decorating the Obama's private quarters?

The East Room and the State Dining Room are public spaces in the White House.

Good point, Michelle, and welcome!

let me understand the thought process -

'someone' said that they saw 'someone' walking with Simon walking though the White House and he mentioned the drapes - as reported by 'someone' on a tour of the building.

and thus - Michael Smith is fired and has been replaced?

here - let me start a new rumor -

"I heard it was Alexa Hampton."

Wow!

I had no idea Michael S. Smith had such a fan base.

Or that so many people have such a vested interest in the decor of the First House.

Lighten up, folks. The post was written in jest.

and by the way - the term "Chief Geyh" is fairly offensive.

So are people who feel their blog names are important enough to trademark.

Sometimes reading bitchy 'too important' comments & the retorts they inspire are even more soul satisfying to me than eye candy!! Wonder if thats got anything to do the fact that I went to a girls school?!!!

OMG OMG OMG!!!
That would be beyond awesome.
I heart Simon.
He's positively awesome in real life, too ;)

Tartanscot: don't mess with my girl.

I know people who work for MS and I can definitely say he is still on the job! They already installed the girl's rooms and were just in NYC sourcing for the project. Sometimes you can't always believe what you read or hear!
