New goodies from West Elm

A sneak peek of West Elm's new fall collection is now available online and in stores. Pottery Barn's younger hipper sister chain seems to be moving from a mid-century modern vibe to a global aesthetic. Which, Dumplings, you know I lurve. A little birdie told me WE's new director of visual merchandising was hired away from Anthropologie. 'Twill be interesting to see what, if any, impact this has on the look of the stores.

Chakra pillow cover.

Hand-loomed Ikat pillow cover.

Ikat woven baskets.

Friends (aka "Scissor Sisters") framed silhouette print.
I kid, I kid.

I love this. Does this mean we will soon hate it all?

Lots of pretties. I love me those baskets. In fact, I've been on the hunt for some exactly like them. Of course I came to the right place.

I'm going to need an ikat pillow for my window seat, thanks Raina!

Sketch 42 - God, I hope not, Nicole. This has "Me" written all over it. Feels more grown-up and less A-tard-ment Therapy.

David - That ikat pillow will be coming home with me, too. And the goofily-named Chakra.

Am I right in thinking that this time next year we will be awash with faintly 70s-turning-into-80s interiors, ie squashy low sofas
lots of interior rattan
trailing indoor plants (maybe spider plants will come out of semi-extinction)
brown orange red indian and african screenprint, wax relief and ikat prints
more traditional kilims (ie not weinrib style)
the return of the persian carpet
and <<>> macrame, used "ironically" for the apartment therapy crowd?

Because if so I feel like I've done all that already and it makes me a little bit sad.

apart from the macrame.
I've never done macrame
just so you all know :)

Melissa - Have you been sitting in on West Elm merchandise planning meetings?

Melissa, you have just described my childhood. To a T.

And mine, erin, and mine. I don't want to go back there again - it was nice 'n all but....

Raina - I've never even seen let alone been in a West Elm sadly - I'm from the UK. Those pillows look exactly like Habitat's offering in 1987 though, that's what got me all suspicious!

Melissa - Trust me, this is a vast improvement over WE's recent collections which have been blatant Marimekko and Jonathan Adler rip-offs.

melissa said...

hmm ok. I'll believe you:)

so is there a west elm in vancouver where I'll be this summer, or is it strictly US only?

Raina Cox said...

Melissa - Sorry, the only Canadian location is Toronto.

i was in WE the other day and was smitten with so so much. i even got a little tribal-y hand carved vase. i love it!!!

yum- this means it should be heading in a good direction.

Anthro seems to have problem holding onto their talent. I know for a fact JCrew is stealing a lot of their fashion designers away!

Hey there, I just found you. I love the name of your blog that's what got me to look further. I read your asshole post and I am right there. I've had the anonymous response before that was less than nice and why can't people remember that if you don't have anything nice to say, you just don't say anything at all!

Can't wait to follow you!

Megan

1 Funky Woman - Hello and welcome to this deliciousness!

Am I the only one out here who DOES NOT like IKAT?
I feel terribly lonely.

Raina Cox said...

Dave - It's OK.

Ikat is a very specific look, like a trippy melting box of Crayolas.

I don't think there is any middle ground with it.

Perhaps you can start a support group within the design community - "NOTikat."

Excellent idea. I'm on it.
