It reminds me of a wedding hall I thought was really glamorous when I was a kid (in the '80s)- It had a fountain, palm trees and all the shebang. When I went back there 10 years later I realized the fountain was out of order, the huge plants were dead and the ceiling was filthy, and that it was the same way 10 years before. I don't know why- but this pic took me right back there...

I really love it, just not huge fan of the wallpaper.
I think it's marvellous and in the same way completely understand where Belly is coming from. I must have very dubious taste....

I'm not a fan. Looks like a porn film set to me - not that I know what they look like.

This would be a NO.

Looks like a really good place for a party.

I kind of love and hate the sofa at the same time. The plants either need dusting or better still, chucking out. Looks like a great place to hang out with margaritas.

Kate- The thing is, it has all the making of a room I could love. I love wallpaper, dark walls and dramatic decor- but something there doesn't feel right.

my favorite and my best said...

can i even SAY retarded anymore??

I actually really love this. Of course it's not for the faint at heart, but if I were Tommy Lee or Pam Anderson this would be my spot in the world.

I'm with Belly... there are things I like about this room, but there are others I don't. Not crazy about the Marilyn Monroe or the shiny sofa (though I could see it working for me in another room, maybe).
I like the fabrics draped everywhere.
Perhaps what is seeming 'off' is the scale... there are a bunch of things that just feel strange to me scalewise.

Something about this really appeals to me...(its not the sofa though). The whole boho vibe, reminds me of some cool spaces from my seventies youth. Must be the amber lighting and all those plants!

I'm not sure if it's the Prince book or the layers that lead all the way back to the hallway but I love it. The details are great, I really appreciate the lamps. This room has so much personality - my favorite part being the piece of art. I wish I had legs like that (or a picture of them when I had them). The only thing I would do differently is the height of the lamps - because the room is so dark, I wish they were about a foot taller. I'd also consider adding an ottoman - this looks like a lounging sofa, it would be nice to be able to put your feet up and really get cozy.

(all that said, I'd never get away with a space like this in my house.)

So since most seem to be poo pooing the sofa, I'll be glad to call dibs on it because it is HOT. Smokin' hot. As is most of the room for that matter. Granted it's not for the faint of heart, but I think this space is fascinating, richly layered, and for grown-ups only. Love.

I know you guys liked the wallpaper, but I cant tell what the hell is going on in that room. Wallpaper? Where? The lamp on the right seems to on a table or something while the left lamp doesnt. I like the art photograph. But I really cant tell what else is up. Like that curtain looks like a morrocan rug...

I *LOVE* the sofa! and the dark floors, and the big-ass plants.
the rest can go away.

MyLittleHappyPlace said...

Too much going on for my taste. The black walls, with the piece of art, and (maybe) the sofa would work, though.

erin@designcrisis said...

I will happily time share the sofa with Nelya...

Hard to tell what the rest of the room actually looks like with all that gross HDR imaging going on up in there, but I am not a fan of having asses shoved in my face.

No, no nkp. That sofa is MINE! But, I'd light a match to the victoriana lamps, straggly palms, and Marilyn wallpaper.

David said...

Its the sort of room where I'd want to undo an extra button. I like it.

Karen@StrictlySimpleStyle said...

Lots going on here, but I do love the sofa, very unique.

Leah said...

yikes! i can kinda see how the sofa could be cool since others pointed it out, but those lamps really make me throw up a little. i can't tell where the wallpaper starts & the jungle ends!

david john said...

OK. NKP and Erin. I look first to your comments. you guys rock:)

I agree. This is a room that doesn't ask whether you like it or not. This is a room that doesn't care if you judge it. Unbutton your shirt, turn on some disco, turn off your phone, the nite is young... this is european living, americans are too self conscious to deocrate like this.

This is one nite of your life, and you probably will never return to this room, but you will remember the nite you saw the sun come up, slowly realizing the couch is purple, just how ugly those lamps are in the daylight.

raina, keep them coming.

I kinda luurrrrve it. I love all kinds of things that i don't actually want to live in- but can appreciate that a deft hand, a strong point of view and an innovative mind came up with this concept- probably SOLD the idea to a client and then executed it- BRILLIANT. If you look closely- the ebony painted wood flows into a hallway with white painted boards. this room is obvs like a little hideaway- hopefully with blasting cold A/C and seu jorge playing on repeat. i would kinda like this room to be hidden behind a secret bookcase in my house.

nkp said...

Ooooh David John, you said it soooo right! I luuuuv your vision ( & version).

That sofa looks like a Togo that ate an Ethan Allen colonial wingback settee from the sixties, and it isn't finished digesting it yet.

Whoa.

dwr - Hello and welcome to this deliciousness!

You're pretty right on with that assessment, but I still want to be a baked potato reclining in its aluminum foil splendor.

Too many Marilyns staring at me! I love the new trend of dark walls, but mix that with the dark floors and all the orange and yellow, and it looks a bit like Halloween around here.

helen said...

If Bianca Jagger were to ride by naked on a horse I should not be surprised. I think this is fantastically decadent although the gynae shot above the sofa is not really for me.

Hassenpfeffer Incorporated said...

That sofa looks like it needs to be floating in a pool. And the overgrown palm fronds can go with it. The palm fronds, the wallpaper, the art, the metallic couch, the 1970's curtain panels - it's all just too much. WAY too much. Then WTF with those lamps? They make absolutely no sense in that room! Too small and too Victorian. The Queen would be appalled at those lamps sitting there under the big cooter pic. Ugh!

Hassenpfeffer Incorporated - Hello and welcome to this deliciousness!

Fantastic handle you've got there.

Hassenpfeffer Incorporated said...

Boy I sure thought that gmail address went to a different account - the handle shocked me, as I created it years ago and never used it again. I was like WHO?

Oh well, I have to stop looking at that sofa as it is making me yearn for Coppertone and leathery skin.

i'm with sketch42 — i just can't SEE! get rid of those gargantuan palms so i can get a glimpse of the rest.

if this was a bar, I would definitely get drunk and make out with someone on that couch

God bless those of you who see the beauty in it. As for the couch, although his comment, read while I had a mouthful of coffee, means my keyboard may never be the same, DWR nailed it.
