Meet Mickey

Yeah, I'm cheesin' it but with good reason. Last week, I was surprised by a visit from the woman who built our house - the Fabulous Mickey! I was caught unawares (meaning in yoga pants and no make-up) and was nervous as hell to show her around. I mean what if she hated what we've done with the place?

Turns out she loved every last thing, especially the wallpapers and light fixtures. The man she sold the house to had trashed it, so she was incredibly pleased to see us bringing it back to its former glory.

Mickey had a zillion stories to share. She built the house with her late husband, and I could see the memories flooding back as she walked around. I became a little teary listening to her share the family moments and details of their many parties.

She'll be back next month for another visit and has promised to bring old photos of the house. Dumplings, you can bet I will be scanning every last one to share with you.

And to bring you up to date on the master bath remodel, most of the demo is finished:

A reminder of what we started with:

I bet she is a hoot! And I love her hair. Real or wig? I am totally wearing wigs when I get older.

That is very exciting - I love learning about the history of the place I am living in. Nice of her to give you no warning too. Old people are like that.

In fact she rather looks like a martini drinking, hoarse laughter, dirty joke kind of lady.

She is. Oh, she is.

How great to know the original owner of your home and even cooler that she likes what you've done to the place. A great compliment.

Wow that is awesome you get the original previous owner who is cool as hell and we get cops at our door looking for our homes previous owners! True story.

Is this the woman who had a deep love of closets in the bedroom??

This is the coolest thing ever! Had you guys met before? I think I love her a little....

how great was walking around with her and hearing her memories...

Bri - It wouldn't surprise me if the po-po showed up asking about the owner previous to us. We had a "grow" closet in the house. You know the kind - reflective walls, special lighting, and its own watering system. We ripped it out.

Naomi - Yep, that's her. When she walked into the master bedroom and saw our bed parked up against the two mirrored closets, she look dumbfounded. But she didn't say anything.

Next year, I'm going to convert one of the master closets to a laundry room. That's how much closet space we have.

A Perfect Gray - No, we hadn't met. My next door neighbor told me that Mickey lives in Florida and comes back here occasionally to visit.

I'd heard through the neighborhood grapevine that Mickey wanted to meet us over the summer. I never heard from her, so I thought she'd changed her mind. It was definitely a surprise.

How cool to have a drop-in from the original doyenne! She seems like a venerable hipster. Doubtless she was thrilled to see what you'd done so far.

How did I miss this post? That's so cool that she came to see you, and that she's coming back with old photos.

I have a feeling your house and Mickey both were pretty glamourous back in the day. You're giving the house its glamour back, and Mickey's obviously still got it.
