The case against open shelving

Thank you! I always see these beautifully styled shots of open shelving and think "oh, maybe it would look like that in my house" when I know it would really look like this. Phew.

and that is why I have no open shelves at all except for our bookshelves. And even they need maintenance.

shit no.
i agree. while i love open shelving to a degree there is absolutely no practicality in it whatsoever.
this just looks like someone decided to go for it not realizing that editing is a key component to open shelving.

Agreed -- hunka hot mess potential.
That's why I'd say no more than a pair -- at most four -- open shelves in a real space.

And that looks better than mine would!

This is why I only have one set of open shelved cabinets...so that all the hideousness can be hidden.

I keep a set of pretty dishes in the open ones. I have one cabinet full to the brim with house reno stuff...sand paper....drill...saw...spackling...paint...thank goodness for doors.

I like open shelves, but not as many and not as full as what is pictured.

My sentiments exactly.

I still like open shelves, just not these.

Well said. Think you should do a lot more of this kind of demythologising of what interior magazines and their stylists are sending our way.....

This is exactly what terrifies me about the prospect of having open shelves. Heck, I have regular cabinets and my kitchen still looks a hot mess!

I'm not fussed so much about things looking messy. However, in my experience items on open shelves in kitchens tend to get greasy due to all the cooking going on. When you pull something down to use it, you often need to wash it again before using it (it's either greasy or dusty). I've lived with open shelves in kitchens but I wouldn't have them again for that reason. It's just annoying (not to mention wasteful) to have to do that over and over again.

I'm with Re—shit gets dusty! Who wants to wash a glass before pouring themselves a drink? (Not this girl.)

Uh, I KNOW! But I have a pantry like that, it is icky.

seriously messy, and the grease, dust (and in my case cat hair) would all just be too much!

Yes, my book shelves are enough work to keep looking decent!

The kitchen no.

I'm planning on some open shelving. The key is to have lots of companion shelving thats not open to go with. Nobody wants to see all the stray mugs.

looks like the start of a hoarder! Not at all pretty.

Not only is it charity shop fug, but you'd end up having to wash your dishes twice... Once after using when it's dirty, but also once before use, to get rid of the dust that will inevitably build up.

Not chic.

Open shelves are so pretty...when perfectly styled and a soothing or interesting selection of dishes.

But, I would never have them due to the dust factor. Combine it with owning a dog...ewww!

I keep my cooking utentials in a bucket by the cooktop for convenience and use them nearly every day, but I still have to toss them in the dishwasher weekly for dusting!!!

Kathleen, Re, and Ailie - Hello to each of you and welcome to this deliciousness!

Ditto, with the dusting! Plus I have a cat, she would be up there knocking down all my ugly stuff all the time (all the pretty stuff would already be broken)

My teenage son's bookshelves are neater!

Although, considering the wooden dog on the stool and knitted cat on the bookshelf- I'm not sure what we'd expect.

You're only allowed to have open shelving if you have cool shit. These people have ugly shit. There isn't a single thing on their shelves I even like, let alone would want on display in my own house. Gross.
