And now back to our regular programming

Yesterday, I deleted this blog. I'm job-hunting and thought that my snarkiness would be a detriment should any employer Google my name. My three closest friends (wassup Chestnuts?!) convinced me to remain true to myself, embrace my sharp tongue-edness, and actually highlight La Lamp Shade on my resumé.

A couple of you asked via the Twitters why no heartfelt farewell. I'm sorry if it seemed rude, but it's just not my style. You have my apologies for running out the door without so much as a backwards glance.

And if you're pissed at me, I understand. Maybe a couple of rollicking good snarkfests will win you back.

Thanks to the wonderful people who reached out and wished me the best. You're SUPERSTARS.

Huzzah for the Chestnuts and saviors of snark! A blog this awesome should be a highlight of any resume! So glad you're back!

Sigh. Relief. Now I can get back to digging myself out of this icy shite. I mean snow.

Chestnut power can change the world.

Love you, n-nut

I think a good snarkfest would rein in the affections of any naysayers!

Good call Lady.

Your blog is like a page of your resume, and really, would you want to work for anyone who doesn't get you?

Bri@Meyouandawiener said...

Woohoo! Back by popular demand! Good luck with the job hunting I might have to join you soon.

Glad you're back, I´m reading from Colombia, and I really enjoy your way.

I am pleased you had a change of heart but can totally understand.. HOWEVER you are who you are and any prospective employer who doesn't get that is an employer you don't want. It's not as if this is some redneck homophobic right to bear arms kind of blog.

Glad your back. I was panicking.

Topaz said...

I get it. Times are tough. Glad you're back, though.

I agree about making the blog part of your resume. It shows a definite point of view, wit and intelligence.

In the future, though, even a one-sentence explanation would probably go a long way. Since you disclosed your health issues recently, some of us might have thought the worst.

Best of luck with whatever you choose to do.

P.S. You can't leave us hanging without pics of your bath re-do!

kristina said...

oh thank heavens. however would i have filled the snark hole in my heart?

The Down East Dilettante said...

Oh no dear one, aside from a bad case of whiplash, I'm okay...you're forgiven.

And from the peanut gallery? Sharp tongued is good, edgy comment is good. Criticism is essential to connoisseurship. Just be nice about people's noses.

The Down East Dilettante said...

And it's funny
Topaz mentions the bath, because I had the same thought earlier today---gosh, we'll never see the finished product.

I would think a successful, highly read and quoted blog should be a resume highlight for many jobs---just not as a certain society magazine editor's personal assistant... :-)

HI!!I just thought there was some weird blip in the universe and I would/will miss you! We are so glad that you do this!

bomm said...

Yours is the only blog I follow regularly, so am glad you are back! Your sharp tongue is directed at people / corporations that can stand up to it, and your design interests are generous. To me, you come off as smart and funny (and even big-hearted), not snarky.

Teri said...

Seriously, my amazing comment just got zapped! grumble, grumble

So- that was the worst 24 hours of my life! No alcohol for you tonight!

Your snarkiness and how you handle people who disagree with you shows a lot about who you are. If someone disagrees with your opinions, you don't get your feathers all ruffled (as long as it is done in a normal way.) You have no problem agreeing to disagree and then going out skeet shooting, this speaks volumes about you.

They either love you just the way you are, or :P~~~~~

Teri said...

(Oh, it was my fault my first comment got zapped. I wasn't paying attention and wasn't logged into google.)

I must have checked ten times yesterday....sooo glad to see you again. I think that your blog shows an intellectual, worldly, free-thinker, with a healthy dose of humor...I'd hire you in a second.....k

ktgirl said...

see, it wouldn't even occur to me that your awesomeness wasn't being paid for, by somebody else who thinks you're awesome. You're like a rock star! (I'm a musician, and just because I got on the radio, people thought I was "rich." As if...) So job hunt, if you must, but don't ever forget how fabulous you are!

p.s. I completely understand about the job thing. I'm doing my PhD and I sometimes wonder if I should tell fellow academics about my blog. Some people get it and others look at me like I'm strange. Whatever...I love it and blogging makes me happy!

Savvy Gab said...

Thank god for this post! I was actually worried yesterday and was hoping it was just a blogger glitch.

So glad you are back. Your impressive following wasn't built our of nothing. Your snarkiness showcases your excellent taste, attention to detail and ability to be a critic when needed - because let's be honest here - we all need critics in this world! Thanks for being you! X

Do whatever you are comfortable with. We'll be here. :)

Good luck with the job search! I think blogs with followings like this one are ones companies should take note of. Sterile voices don't attract a crowd. Having a strong point of view does.

I was more concerned than upset- and in the early stages of withdrawal :) So glad you have chosen to remain true to yourself-bold and hilaaaarious!

Oh my! I'm glad you are back, I thought it was just technical difficulties. But I know where you are coming from, I don't want the kids I work with to ever find my blog, but who am I kidding, they probably already have.

Sketch42 said...

I was also actually worried. I thought maybe something bad happened to you.

Im glad everything is ok- and if I were you and looking for "real job" la lampshade would def be on my resume!
Nothing to be ashamed of... you do a great job!

Hell girl, I didn't even get a chance to notice due to travel! I will always love you :) You can always take your name off the blog and just be the snark queen of La Lamp Shade! Just don't ever leave us again.

Phew. That was a scary moment.
Dont go. You start my day right!!

good luck with the job search. Design folk your way would be crazy not to hire you in a super flash!

dave said...

I figured it was something like that. And, honestly, it's too late now. Even if your blog didn't exist, I get 141,000 hits on your name on Google, complete with cached pages of Lampshade. Welcome to the Internet, where nothing ever really goes away.

That being said, who wouldn't want the real you?

MyLittleHappyPlace said...

Thank GAWD! I thought I'd done something to offend you! (or, in all seriousness, that something epically wrong had happened)
Whew!
There IS no blog world without Raina!

Very happy you are back and I've never interpreted anything you've said as snarky btw- just whitty and honest.

The universe has realigned. I was so depressed that friends called today and ask if someone died! I am now back to my old self.
As for the cash factor, remember that if your fun Atlanta friend can make a living at this (with her lovely snarkiness), so can you. She is about to be on HGTV for heaven's sake. In the interim, go add your self a sponsor page and start getting a little extra spending money. M.

Yay!! I think you've made an awesome decision to stay true to you. Your blog is amazing! It has heart, wit, talent and is filled with a unique energy, brightness and enthusiasm. Any potential employer worth their salt should hire you in a second after spending even just a little time here.

Your comments are always insightful, intelligent, funny and spot-on, but I've never sensed them ever coming from a mean or hurtful place. Your voice is really unique - if the blog isn't paying now, I'm super confident it will turn into something that will if you stick with it!

So glad you are back!! : )

Crap...I take some time to clean my closet (and bake) and you try to leave us?

I seriously can't think of anything on this blog that would prevent employment...so no more using the bad word aka delete..OK?

Julie @ Chapman Interiors said...

Ah ha!! My robot mastery DOES work all the way from Portland!!

Big yay and awkward long hug.

(I think you really just deleted la lamp to get the positive comeback comments... I'm on to you.. Don't think it goes unnoticed.)

I forreals already missed you. It felt a little empty without you and your snark face.

Glad you're sticking around... and the above comments are correct. This blog (from the beginning when you were in New Zealand, even) is a wonderful resume.

Good luck!!

Geezus, thank goodness forces stronger than I strong-armed you back into submission (or reason).
I for one would hire you in a minute if I did a google search and La Lampshade came up.
Some of us, upon hearing the news, were on the brink of dangerous self-destruction. Could you have lived with that, I ask? :)
Thank goodness we're back to the regular schtick.
Cheers and good luck with the job hunt, Alcira

Oh, thank heavens! For a second I thought I set up my blogroll incorrectly.

I'm job hunting too, and I went through the same thought process as you, ultimately deciding to keep it.

Good luck with everything!

Your honesty is the only reason that I'm here every day. I'm glad to hear that you didn't go very far. Good luck!

Jessica said...

hey, if you can't be yourself, what the fuck is the point? so glad you've decided not to deprive the world (or just us) of you in all your brilliance

anyway, the eternal optimist that is me just assumed something wonky had happened and that you'd fix it toute suite - which is sorta true - yay!!

autrichenoire said...

You are brilliant snd snarky but never ever mean spirited any potential employer would appreciate that am sure.

I thought techical hitch...

Wow, I just found your blog recently, and have become a huge fan. I find your blog intelligent, creative, unique, and sarcastic in a very humorous, edgy way! I can't imagine an employer not wanting all of those qualities.

Hey! Glad your back! Thanks for the whole explanation...and as for highlighting your blog on your resume...Imagine being hired by a company that embraces your style and sense of humor and loves you for it? That would be perfect? No? Seems like great advice! And a good way to weed out any boss-"tools"as well!

Naomi @ Design Manifest said...

WHOA. Wow I was wondering what was going on. And for sure La Lampshade is a huge plus to the resume! Glad you had the ladies to talk some sense into you.

I actually think its hilarious you wouldn't look back. Good for you. Life first. (And sounds like life is quite exciting for you these days!!)
