Sorry. Again with the pap smear.

modern torture chamber. Or is it medieval...can't figure it out.

Just consider all the processes in coming up with an idea, designing, sourcing materials, production, advertising.... and nobody thought to turn around and say "Look, I think this is a bad idea."

I love it. I'll take the whole room, though it would look horribly out of place here in Southern NH. I'd put it in my house in the English countryside, though I'd add a picture of Sir Winston.

I look at it and am sad. I see all those rivets as nails in the coffin off restoration hardware's business. I can't see more than about 5 people in the world that would be willing to shell out $1500 or whatever it is for this themey desk. They have way too much of this metal wrapped stuff in the most recent catalog.

I have a guy client who would go big for this look but on the average I think one would gt tired of the look very quickly.

I see Howard Hughes in this somehow!

Makes me think of a sad little man, one who never grew up, living vicariously now. I bet when no one's looking he plays with paper airplanes rather than actually getting some work done. M.

Ok, this telepathy thing is getting totally weird. I spent all weekend staring at this monstrosity and trying to remind myself to send it to you so that you could publicly ream it. RH makes some great stuff, but this is what I call going totally overboard.
Cheers, Alcira

Pure camp. So over the top cartoony-masculine that it's more somebody's idea of what masculine should look like than really masculine.

Wouldn't be caught dead.

So glad you've decided to keep the lamp shade on; it suits you. Congratulations on your many wonderful new projects!

All I can think of when I see that chair is Hannibal Lector's mask. Creeps.

I just can't get on board. This look is so weird.

I agree Jane I was thinking Howard Hughes too. Not in a I'm hot like Leonardo DiCaprio way, but like I drink my own urine way.

my favorite and my best- MFAMB to you said...

no.

it's some guy's design midlife crisis.

Appletree, you are awesome.

I like the bookshelf (and I LOVE their metal wrapped trunks), but the rest belongs in a bomb shelter.

JoAnn said...

Would never have more than one piece in a room but love the sheen and texture of the metal and the stitching detail. Bookshelves especially.

I feel a little nauseous looking at it...even if you liked it, you would spend a ton of money and probably look back in a year's time and think "why?!"

Ah,,,I don't think so. Like the desk lamp, telescope and leather club chair though. After your Jonathan Adler post, I bought a pillow at his store here in Newport Beach. So cheerful!!

Looks like it could take a bullet. And might need to.

julietsblog said...

Not all together! I kind of like the bookshelf, but with none of the other styling. The desk is wacky, something someone may like if discovered solo...but to know your neighbor could get it delivered tomorrow? nah.

NK said...

its not me, but there's something to it. A funkier snuggle chair (or is it a couch?) in the back would have taken this up a notch. It kinda looks just thrown in.

I wouldn't call the whole thing ugly, its not.

Yikes! Looks like Resto Hdware products are designed by committee. I can imagine some marketing veep asking of the new product development: "But does it aesthetically align with our "Edgy-urban-industrial-loft-offspring-of-Vervoordt-Kasler-parentage?" No... And then they flax it up and rivet it out. Sad.

Restoration Hardware, what happened to you? This could not be anymore awful looking had it been the actual result of a plane going down.

Raina, are you moonlighting as Appletree in your off hours? Too funny.

nkp - Appletree is her own special flavor of awesomesauce, isn't she?

No. The Restoration Nation is out of control.

everything in this picture reminds me of skymall... down to the "Capt your-name-here", for an extra $29.95, leather jacket.

I wish the desk worked, but the patchwork aluminum is ugly and cold -- I can't imagine actually working on it -- and the desk itself is utterly impractical, not to mention that the chair is frightening.

The bookshelves, however, are as amazing as they are immense. That's a whole lot of metal, but it could work in the right room (the right room, by the way, is not a fake aviator's secret hideout). If I had the space and the money, I'd snatch those up immediately.

Last April 1, the Restoration Hardware Director of Design issued a memo to his staff, "Hey people, we've been forgetting about the second half of our name! Think rivets!"

And someone took him seriously.

Sharon @ Real Estate Resuscitation said...

What is wrong with that company? As my Dad said the last time I went into a Restoration Hardware store with him, "What happened to the Restoration Hardware?"

blog said...

LOL! All I can think of when I look at this is Howard Hughes as played by Leonardo Dicaprio in that movie I still haven't seen.

P.S. this is pretty atrocious.

P.P.S. Does it actually fly? That would be pretty cool...

I'm bored with the Restoration Hardware catalogs. This on the cover...didn't motivate me to open it.

i'm afraid even the wright brothers would think that desk is wrong.....

themes can be great in decorating, but this one was realized way too literally.

it makes me sad...i love restoration hardware. just had their kensington leather sofa delivered to my house and it's gorgeous, great, timeless...

Perfect for a Wing Man. For others, not so great.

Somehow I am seeing that documentary where Afghanistan is using war detritus to build with. Maybe this desk is an export from there.

Acanthus and Acorn said...

Damn...you beat me to it. I almost went on another RH rant when I got my catalogue today when I saw this!

The desk is completely stupid, but I actually like the chair but would want to confirm it's comfortable and the right proportions to actually use!

I give them credit that it's not the normal rip-off of someone else's original design.

Booooo this stinks definitely not something I'm loving in Restoration Hardware.

Looks like male midlife fuckery at its best. That chair is actually really hideous.

The chair looks like it could be extremely comfy or horrifying.

I hadn't noticed the bookshelves until I read about them in the comments, those I love.

No to the desk. Just no.

One word. NO. Oh wait...that's a waste a material and time.

lil Me said...

I think I kind of like it... probably because it looks like something from Flight of the Navigator. Nostalgia I guess?

The Zhush said...

lol! I got this catalog in the mail the other day, and after I threw up a little in my mouth, and promptly tossed it in the trash, I wondered...what will Raina have to say about this! :)

Lacey from Weekends at Home said...

Did you see the post catalog living did on this hideousness?

Lacey - That's hilarious. She's so funny. Love her stuff on Curbed too.

not even my father and grandfather, both fighter pilots, could possibly appreciate this.

but i suppose someone somewhere must have an amelia earhart themed room, in which case this would be perfection.

Mitch - Hello and welcome!
