My Oscar dress picks and pans

Are you glued to the boob tube tonight?  So far, the only person who has impressed me is Kirk Douglas, but we're not watching for the awards and achievements.  It's the fancified frocks we care about...

I'm not the biggest Gwynnie fan, but damn if the GOOPster didn't tear the house down.
Calvin Klein gown.

Gorgeous color on a gorgeous girl.
Elie Saab gown.

 OH HONEY.  You look amazing.
Versace gown.

And then are a few, as there are every year, who make you wonder if their hotel suites don't have mirrors...

This is what a high-rent drag queen buys off the sale rack at Caché for her Streisand medley.
Oscar de la Renta gown.

Created from the vestments of defrocked priests.
Dior gown.

Your dead Italian grandmother's parlor curtains.
Dolce & Gabanna gown.

Sharon Stone went for the windswept look.  Oh, and her hair did too.

Dumplings, I'm on the fence about Cate Blanchett's.  Your thoughts?
Givenchy gown.

I think it is stinky.

So many people are on the fence about Cate, but I love it! She is so elegant and refined.

GOOPs is nice and very wearable, I like the colour of ScarJo's, but not the actual dress and Shar looks like Cruella.

Forgot to say that Helen Mirren looked stunning as always.

Kates dress looks like its growing boils. Disturbing

Totally agree with your picks. I think I love Cate's gown...she might be the only one who could pull off such a look!

Your lovelies are spot on. As to the rest, I agree with you 99%. Reese’s dress was just ho-hum, not offensive. Cate B’s? The ring a round the boob thing is distracting; I’m getting a Louis Ghost Chair with a sparkly slipcover vibe. (All apologies to Phillipe Starck.)

I have to admit, I'm not a fan of Cate's dress. That neckline and shoulder-pad situation remind me of the Starship Enterprise for some reason. Beam me up, Scottie.

This is the back of Cate's gown...

Ooh, that back picture got me off the fence. I am totally Team Cate. She is rocking that thing and I think the back makes it.

Cate's dress looks like my grandmother's night gown meets a Disney princess gone wrong - and if anyone other than Cate was wearing it, we would've acknowledged that straight away. But her amazing looks means she can sort of pull it off without too much criticism..

love cate and her dress. nice to see something different. i suspect she could wear a dress crafted from macrame and used band-aids and would still manage to look exquisitely elegant.

Boy, send the girl to a couple of New York fashion shows and now she's a critic.

Just teasing. I'm with you line for line (or do I mean seam for seam?) on this one. You got it all exactly right. I just caught up with the Kidman dress in the Times a few minutes ago--and until I read your comment, I just couldn't quite place it...absolutely, old vestments.

As for Sharon Stone, it would appear that she's beginning to morph into her role model...the next three decades are going to be interesting.

gurl...you gonna have to wait and see tomorrow who i love and hate...
but i will say we are damn close.

Oh, I disagree about Reese. I think she looks lovely.

I thought Gwyneth's dress was a stunner and the best of the night. I adored the lavender lace one too on Mila Kunis. I'm starting to worry about Nicole...she's been picking bad dresses lately. Reese's was ok...I don't think it's her style and she looked out of place in it. I love Cate and think she always makes great choices...but this one I didn't care for. I only saw Michelle Williams in the audience but she looked the most gorgeous I've ever seen her...I'm going to search the net to see if I can find a full length pick of her.

Sandra Bullock looked great. I think all in all there were far better dresses this year than in any past year I can think of.

I liked James Franco's dress the best.

And I think Nicole Kidman bought her dress at the "Catholic Prom" store on 7th Ave and 31st St... :-)

Robin - HAHAHAHAHAHA! I wish I'd snapped a picture of that place.

I loved Cate's dress and think Goopy looks sexless. Great dress but she adds nothing to it, shame really as when she vamps it up she looks amazing.

David said...

Reece tried to do what Julia Roberts did with that vintage Valentino years ago, but couldn't pull it off. I think Cate Blanchett's dress is awful.

James Franco's smile makes me feel all bubbly inside.

I like the beading on Cate's dress, the "ring around the boob" look is where it loses me.

nkp said...

Agreed. I haven't watched the coverage yet, so thanks for the sneak peek.

1. Nicole's attire is screaming Jessica McClintock to me.

2. Sharon's eye makeup isn't doing her any favors.

3. Only Cate could pull off Cate's dress. I think with her unique beauty, sophistication, and confidence it works. Somehow she can make it look interesting and not contrived.

Spot on Raina! Cate's dress is a big ole NO for me...not feelin' it, didn't mind Reese's dress as much as I hated her hair! From the side it was uber ridiculous, no? And the Nicole K comment is just amazing...maybe you should be writing for Racked too? hmmmm?:)

did you notice gwynnies dress had to be lengthened for her? Not very well, either. That's where you can really tell klieg isn't couture. Otherwise she looks great.

not klieg (where did that come from?!)

A circle around your boobs, it never good. As an aside, I woke up and raced to the computer to see your thoughts on Gwynnie's song! I just knew you would post about it! Would love to hear your take. M.

Interior Design Musings - I thought Richard Lawson of Gawker said it best: "At this point it must be concluded that Gwyneth Paltrow has no grasp of the concept of embarrassment."

Gwen was one of my top choices as well. Also liked Celine Dion's look.
Cate Blanchett...people at the Oscar party I went too were also divided about this one. I kind of like it because it's so different.

hated cate's dress. loved her hair.

Love Cate -- she can work even the most avant-garde gown. All around diggin' it.
Also, Nicole must be allowed to do what she wishes -- her frame was made for impossible-to-pull-off gowns made of cast-off vestimenti.
And you're right, La Goop always looks smokin'...wonder where her baby-faced hubby is all the time?

She is one person that no matter what she wears, she can carry it off. And her voice and presence give me goosebumps, she can do no wrong.

Loved Cates frock. She does no wrong in my eyes.
IS that Shazzas death stare?

Two instances of looking better on stage vs. on the red carpet: I loved Cate's dress - that is, when I saw her wearing it on TV, walking to up the mic. However, I can see now that still photos don't quite do it justice.

Ditto how Reese W. looked. Yeah, "1993 is calling" is a fair criticism. I'm just feeling the love for Preppy Barbie right now.

Teri said...

Oh, they were pure torture! Anne Hathway wasn't that bad- but Franco should have been shot and put out of my misery.

Cate Blanchett's dress- love the color, love the back, do not like the round frame on her chest.

I swear that Reese has worn that dress before.

Hated Cate's. LOVED, make that LURVED Mila's dress. Ahhh. Also loved Halle Berry's dress. Nicole Kidman's dress scared me.

All I know is this - my Dad told me on the phone today that he and my Mom had agreed to watch the awards together since they were proud that they had seen most all of the movies nominated this year. Mom told Dad that she would be watching in her gown (as in nightgown) so she expected him to be in a tux. Dad said she came into the room ready to watch and he was hiding his top half acting like he was reading the newspaper. He lowered the paper to reveal to Mom that he had on red striped pajama bottoms, a white Hanes-type t-shirt and his black bow tie! He said he remained dressed in his tie the entire show. Good one, huh?

I love Kate Blanchet so much that I don't care what she wears, she is still the best looking woman around for miles, as far as I am concerned. I thought Goopster was meh myself...

Sharon - I love that so much.

i;m not on the fence. i loathe cate's dress! haha!!! oh well. she really couldn't care less what I think.

my fav was halle berry

Only Cate could wear that dress and I thought she did so well. I also love pretty much everything about her most of the time. Loved Mila's gown and was crazy over Gwyneth's...and again who else could pull that off!? Halle Berry looks the same as every event..it seems she always trying to look nude....I think we all know by now she has a perfect body. I'd like to see a new hairstyle and a dress with color.

Julie @ Chapman Interiors said...

LOVEd mila the most, GOOP was a close second though. WTF is reese wearing? is it 1996 still? Blanchett was a no for me too.
