Very Vera

So I wake up this morning bright-eyed and bushy-tailed after four days of The Cold From Hell to find the Vera Neumann settee from Anthropologie I've had my eye on is enjoying its second price reduction.  Marked down from $2998, it's now $999.95.  I want it more than Charlie Sheen wants his own planet to rule populated by porn stars and coca plants (#winning).  But for various and sundry reasons, the Francine sofa cannot be mine (#notwinning).

The next best thing (almost, but not really) is the definitive tome on all things Vera.  Because the retail gods were most benevolent today, it was also marked down - from $40 to $19.95.

For those not familiar with Vera Neumann, she was the preeminent female textile designer of the 20th century.  She was an innovator in cross-licensing with her original artwork featured on bedding, table linens, china, needlepoint kits, clothing and her signature scarves.  Neumann created at least one piece of art every day of her adult life until a few months before her death in 1993.

Her pieces can be found, usually for a song, on eBay.  And if you're a fan of bright cheerful happypants designs of the 1960s and 1970s, I urge to pick up the book.  It's chock-a-block full of colorful inspiration.

I've loved Vera's scarves for a while now and look at them on eBay every once in a while. I need to find the right one to frame. So graphic and pretty. Just what I need as it's dreary today in Nashville. Maybe I should just grab the book!

Oh, I have a favorite Vera tablecloth - I don't ever use it because I don't want it to wear out. As a child of the 70's I remember hers was THE stuff to have!

Feeling your pain. Went to a moving sale at a store here over lunch. Found a sofa (by American Leather) that is perfect. Got back to work, went to look up the dimensions on the website...not there, so probably discontinued. Arrgh.

That sucks I've been in this predicament a few times and it usually ends up with me selling as much crap as I have that I no longer care for only to be short which leads to then me begging my husband and getting a BIG FAT NO! Sucks I tell you. Hardcore.

Hey Raina!! All you need is a white sofa, some chutzpah and some fabric paint- and you get yourself that fab sofa on a zero budget!!!! It kinda sucks you live so far away or I could show you how to get yourself that sofa done - I admit it is a stunner.......

I love Vera. I have several vintage scarves that I love *sigh* the sofa I wouldn't mind having if I had space for it.

I think you need La Lamp Shade version of Vera (meaning Craigs list/yard sell score) then find yards of cheap twill and some paint and...VOILA, one of a kind art for your bum that will make us all crazy jealous!

I come for the snark, but I stay for the education. I'm clicking on the book right now, well almost.

This is fabulous...and most informative.
I too love the Francine, so much so in fact, that I wrote an ode in her honor in Nero's salad days.
But Vera, well, she sounds like a true visionary and a real piece 'a work.
Swell stuff, Lampshade ;)

I just picked up the book for $9.97. I am planning on framing the first page for my bedside. Sorry the settee isn't come to the Lampshade Casa.

Didn't know the detail about the one piece of art....or about the sale on the book, which I think I must own! Winning post!

I love Vera and always pick up a scarf if I see it at a thrift store! Good to know about the book - I've been eyeballing it for awhile but I don't pay retail for much of anything. Certainly not at Anthro!
