Old lady shoes

Dumplings, I think I was born 87 years old. I collect vintage caftans and would drink vodka tonics every afternoon if alcohol didn't make my heart flip flop. I've always been fascinated by women of a certain age, probably because my grandmother was so damn much fun to be around:

Nana dressed as a French prostitute for Halloween.

So when I saw a pair of casual shoes at Old Navy today, my mind immediately leapt to the elderly's footwear of choice - Grasshoppers. They bring to mind chain-smoking tennis-playing Grannies of a certain station who drive ancient Mercedes convertibles and have a thousand bitchy stories to tell you about their sisters-in-law. In short, ladies who make excellent company.

Indeed they do.

My own grandmother alternated between grasshoppers and Belgian shoes--I recall no others.

Makes me think of my grandma's youngest sister. She loved bourbon and big band and in the telling of a story would sometimes say things like "Well, I didn't always leave with the man who brought me."

Gin martinis, long Cadillac Eldorado, cocktail rings, coiffed hairdo, manicured nails, shoes in ostrich, heals of acrylic, and during the day it was Grasshoppers. Tiny list of my grandma.

Delightful, delightful, delightful.

I hope my future grandkids think of me as fondly as you cherish your Nana!

My grandmother was a little Sicilian lady who wore big black dresses and really ugly black shoes with stockings. Your granny wins!

I wish I knew your Nana. My grandmothers while wonderful never dressed up as French prostitutes for Halloween. That's priceless! We have a friend that we've known since college that we said was always dying to be 50 (every time a Talbots TV commercial came on, we would think of her). Now, that we're getting closer to 50, think we might have to say she's dying to be 80.

My comment on this was posted via cell the other day and didn't go through.
But it was something to the effect that women of a certain age are just far more fun, so long live Auntie Mame and Nana in our hearts.
Cheers, Alcira

I'll trade you Nana's! Mine wore Little Miss Piggy shoes. She stuffed her size 8 double-wide sausage feet into a teeny tiny narrow high heeled shoe. She spent a lot of time sitting on the couch at every family gathering looking like she was in pain and not saying much until her third gin and tonic. Then she was a hoot. I inherited her shoe collection. They are so small I wear them as charms on a bracelet.

Your Nana sounds like a blast!
