Why you should approach OKL's Tastemaker Tag Sales with caution

This evening One Kings Lane is hosting yet another Tastemaker Tag Sale. An opportunity for a retailer or designer you've most likely never heard of to unload purchasing mistakes and/or a client's old crap.

Tonight Cuffhome is offering a pair of Jute-wrapped Stools. Here's the thing: the stools are shown with a suggested retail of $625 marked down to a "bargain" $399. You can order the exact same bar stool right this very moment from Anthropologie for $198 each or $396 for the pair.

I don't begrudge the ladies of Cuffhome for trying to recoup their money for something a client probably said "Uh ... no" to. But don't try to fake us out with a jacked up "retail" price. The internet is a very small place.

Anthropologie's 26" Reata Counter Stool.

Huge Mwah for this one! The joke in our office is, "Well, they hate it, we could always OKL it..." Then I see a foggy vignette of some fool tempted at the onset of a ponzi scheme/insider trade/'prescription drug' website. "Seems so easy..." Then I snap out of it and get a quote together for approval.

yep! also one of the reasons i hate the craptastically cloying apartmenttherapy... i've been censored numerous times when pointing out where one could find via a little googling the same exact object for less than half the price charged by the friends/vendors (friendors?) they promote.

Love how you effortlessly demystify the world of design retail for those of us who can't seem to see the forest for the trees.
Thank God someone's keeping it real.
Cheers, Alcira

chanda - Seriously?! That kind of nonsense really chaps my hide.

P.S. "Friendors" is AWESOME.

Chanda is right. I googled an Alexa Hampton for Visual Comfort lamp for half of OKL's "discounted" price

I've recognized a few things on their site that I've seen elsewhere for lower prices. It pays to do your homework.

I've suspected this for ages! Glad you've mentioned it :) Be careful everyone.

...and notice from your pic that the stools were already in someone's cart! thanks for calling this out--I like to refer to this type of thing as "the emperor's new clothes" scam whereby you slap a high price on an item, have a "designer" sell it...and BAM--lots of "oooooo's" and "ahhhhhh's" and shopping cart action. Fool me once...I've been to enough crappy auctions and estate sales (and i mean that in the very best way!) to now know better...

love this blog.

vignettehome.net - The stools were sold before I'd even finished typing up the post.

And thanks for the love!

OKL and other sites like it are for stupid people. Seriously the whole "retail/offered for the incredibly low price only today" gig has me wondering if these people are indeed living on some island all together.

that ep of Million Dollar Decorators with ML-B and the OKL ladies shopping in London for his sale had my hub (and antiques retailer) and I cackling out loud. The premise was that these 3 people would fly to London (1st class, no doubt) and shop for stuff AT RETAIL PRICES IN ONE OF THE MOST EXPENSIVE CITIES IN THE WORLD, then bring the stuff to the US, likely adding shipping AND duty charges to the goods, then sell them to poor suckers who want a slice of ML-B, and paying MORE shipping charges. HAHAHAHAHHA! Pffft, you'd get a better deal on 1st Dibs. But don't get me started on that...

I am sooo glad you did this post!!! I've "pinned" a couple of things with the exact sentiments, only to retract them (or one) for fear of pissing someone off! So many bloggers have hopped on the OKL bandwagon that it's a little intimidating.

Wow, it's not just me - that's good to know. Again, thanks for saying it outloud!!

Late to the party, but I've done a whole series on this. It's truly mad.
