At 1:15am this morning, we were woken by emergency services response to the mass shooting at a nearby movie theater. For those of you not familiar with Denver, this happened in one of the sketchiest areas of the city. The suburb of Aurora is notorious for gang and drug activity.
We live about 15 minutes from this theater. While we're officially in Denver, we've been feeling the "creep" of Aurora headed our way. We listed our house in May and had it under contract a few weeks later. We were headed to the foothills, hoping for a quieter neighborhood and a shorter drive time for LB. Our buyers turned out to be con artists who demanded $60,000 off their offer after last week's inspection (it had turned up only a few hundred dollars of needed repair). Needless to say we told them to eff off.
We lost the beautiful mountain house we had under contract. LB was looking forward to a 12-minute commute, and The Pea was over the moon about attending an elementary school with deer and elk wandering the grounds. We didn't feel we could have our house sold again by the time she starts kindergarten next month, so we took it off the market. We'll remodel the kitchen and try again next spring.
I had planned on getting our cat a kitty buddy once we'd moved. Last night, Pea and I visited our local shelter and found the most handsome little devil (above). He's three months old and full of high octane kitten energy. He is unafraid of our 15 lb. tom who just wants to love up the baby cat. We have yet to name him, but I'm leaning towards "Henry."
I'm looking forward to a weekend filled with kitten love and vodka lemonades. I hope yours is lovely.

Awww what a sweety. Sorry about all the house trouble :(((
There's nothing more wonderful than a cat! Or two, or three ....
I just finished reading about the Aurora shootings online. Words fail me.
Henry is just about the cutest little guy I've ever seen. Enjoy your weekend filled with kitten love!
Kray Kray.
"Can haz wurld peash?"
I love the new meow! I hope the kitten was a solid consolation for losing the house, so lame! It is no fun to get your hopes up and then be disappointed. Just means something better is on the way!! Stay safe and sound, please!
Very sweet. He must be extremely smart. I see he's already learned to smeyes for the camera.
Oh wow, he's cute. And I don't even like cats! Sorry you lost the mountain house - so disheartening.
Ugh. I'm sorry. It's all so crazy.
And that's really one cute kitten you found. He's lucky to have all of you.
Happy weekend to you, Raina.
I've been gone so long, I had no idea you were selling the Barbie Dream House.
Congrats on the kitten. It seems like the perfect answer to the craziness in this world.
xoxo
Cutie cute or what- what an adorable addition to the La Lamshade household.
Sorry to hear about the troubles in the 'hood and realty -wise, that really sucks as they say.
Put it out of your mind and enjoy your new adorable cat feller.
Have a great weekend,
Bea
That kitty is precious! So sorry to hear about the house struggle, and the news from the shooting was horrific. On a good note, I just stumbled upon your blog and fell in love. So excited to follow along!
XO,
Sam

i'm bummed you lost the house and almost got conned. Sometimes the world sucks. Kittens do make it better. congrats!
As the newly "adopted parent" of a 12 week old kitten who "found" me (sucker that I am)and decided to come live with me although I told her many times I was not in the market for another cat, I would have to say there is nothing cuter than a kitten IN A PICTURE OF A KITTEN. It's been a long time since I had a kitten in the house (my last two cats lived to be 18 and 19 years old, and the current cat found us as a young, but fully grown cat)and I had forgotten how wild and destructive they can be, all while being as cute as only a ktten can be. Sigh. Guess I'll just have to put all the breakable stuff away for a while.
So sorry to hear about the tragedy there in Aurora. Horrifying, really.
so terribly sorry about the tragedy in Aurora, sketchy or not, this stuff just shouldn't happen.
i'm glad you all are safe and sound and wish you a lot of luck in your housing search.
now go enjoy your new addition to the family and those vodka lemonades.
Kittens and vodka lemonades make everything better. Even the really shitty stuff.
So sad about Aurora.
That is one sper cute kitty, though.
So glad you are safe, so sorry that scam artists exist in this world, so happy for you that a little vanilla & butterscotch cutie pie is the newest member of the La Lampshade family. Now go teach that young whippersnapper that climbing on curtains is bad, but making fresh ice for Mommy's cocktail is good...
Henry will make up for it. x
Totally unrelated, but Holly Mathis Interior posted that she spotted John Robshaw on housefabric.com and wanted to share with you. 20 patterns at $25/yard

Though you write about it so matter-of-factly, I can imagine that the whole house thing must have been like a roller coaster. What a complete and utter bugger. As someone above said - Kray Kray. And as someone else said, the kitten seems like a perfect antidote.

Oh, you Dumplings are just the best. Thank you for your kind words.
formerlyonlyamovie - I've been on the donwnlow with the house sale. This is actually the first I've mentioned it.
Sam [The Peak of Tres Chic] - Welcome to this deliciousness!
life, in small chunks - I haven't had a baby kitten since I was 10. Last night was akin to the first few months with my newborn daughter.
Tenia - Thanks so much for that incredible tip!
Pimp My Bricks - Last week was gutting. The only solace I can take is that we're meant for an even more spectacular house.
As wrenching as a deal falling through is, I do think we all end up where we're supposed to be. Your house is coming.
And I'm totally on board with the name Henry, it really seems to fit. I'm a dog guy, but he's a darling kitty.
Total bummer on the house deal. But I can't wait to see what the kitchen looks like after the remodel. Kitty is a little cutie pie. Congrats.
ugh. sorry about the house. but cling to the idea that something better's out there. i had to walk away from the most amazing house because the owners had falsified the inspection records. it nearly killed me, but then i found the farmhouse and it's the absolute right place for me.
and i have no words about what happened in aurora. too sad.
thought of you when the news of that terrible thing broke.
a new kitten is a good thing right about now.
Ugh, Raina, just ugh. I am keeping you and yours in my thoughts.
Such a horrible event happened in your hood.
but onto nicer things- cute kitty! As a fur mother of a Trevur, i think Henry is a fitting name for the lil purry!
commiserations on the house sale. congratulations on the kitty!
So sorry to hear this... the house you wanted sounds exactly like where my family lived years ago. They STILL talk about it. You will find something even better!
That kitten is preshie... I love his little tangerine raccoon tail!
