NBA WaGs at home

Kimberly Chandler, wife of New York Knicks player Tyson Chandler,

New York Magazine's The Cut blog posted an amazing story today about the wives and girlfriends of NBA players. And by "amazing," I mean stupefying in its depiction of these women as merely ornamental. Entire September fashion titles are name-checked in descriptions of vast wardrobes and couture outfits for game appearances. One woman even has a Pomeranian named "Gucci."

Alexis Welch, fiancée of Knicks player Amar’e Stoudemire, in their Miami home.

While the article's focus is on fashion, three of the women interviewed are photographed in their homes. Houses with decor which can only be described as the overwrought hybrid of Z Gallerie, the dressing rooms at Caché and a banana republic dictator's compound: "Jumbo is the theme around here, in fact, with grandpa-bear-size furniture in sandy colors arranged in formal patterns under chandeliers the size of adolescents."

Vanessa Bryant, wife of L.A. Lakers player Kobe Bryant, with Gucci.

I'm torn between demanding an intervention by the editors of The World of Interiors and Architectural Digest and taking wondrous delight in the Swarovski and silver-leaf glazed excess of it all.

Is there a nonconformist amongst the bunch with some subtlety?

The Pink Pagoda - I'm guessing Bunny Williams and Michael S. Smith didn't return their calls.

ok, true confessions time- except for the unfortunate fan coral-sconce-thing, picture one really doesn't offend me at all. the other two, well, the less said the better.

I remember when Mrs. Bryant was a wide-eyed teenager at 17. She has crossed into dowdy so quickly.

So klassy!

This makes me think my 785 square feet of "let's get ready for resale" decor isn't so bad after all.
