Calling all my fellow weirdos

An Amorphopallus titanum, or corpse flower, is expected to bloom this Sunday at the Denver Botanic Gardens. Endemic to Sumatra, this incredible floral wonder can grow to 9 feet high and take a decade to bloom. If you can't make it to the DBG this weekend, watch the (slow-moving) spectacle on this live feed.

The one at the National Arboretum bloomed last year. There were hours-long lines to see it.

I saw one bloom in Madison a few years ago! It almost doesn't seem like something from this planet.

Also: Amorphophallus has got to be simultaneously the most appropriately yet inappropriately named genus of living thing.

If you go, bring the Vicks Vapo-Rub to smear under your nose. They don't call it a corpse flower because it looks like one... it's because it SMELLS like one. If you've never smelled a corpse, I can tell you you really, really want to bring the Vicks Vapo-Rub. You have been warned.
